Thalakavery the lap of nature

Thalakavery the lap of nature

It’s chilling cold in January when I was travelling to Thalakavery through the steep hill from Panathur to Bagamandala and to the top of Brahmagiri hills to the top of the origin of the river Kaveri.

Thick forest and steep snowy mountain 1,276 m. above the sea level and the windy weather usher my spirit higher and  I believe anyone can feel an intimacy with nature.

Talakaveri is the wellspring of the stream Kaveri. It is situated by Brahmagiri slope close to Bhagamandala in Kodagu area, Karnataka, An amazingly serene place in the slope of picturesque Brahmagiri hills.

Sanctuary

little sanctuary has been raised on a slope by Kodavas, and the etymology of Kodava means ‘blessed by the mother Kaveri ‘ and it is said to be the root of river Kaveri.

The waterway starts as a spring bolstering this tank, which is thought to be a heavenly place to bathe on unique days. The waters are then said to stream underground to develop as the Kaveri waterway.

People worship geodes Kaveramma and the other divinities are worshipped here are Lord Agasthiswara and Lord Ganesha.

THE MITH

The legend goes that the Kaveri waterway was held in a Kamandalu (a holder of holy water) by Sage Agastya. Vinaayaka (Lord Ganesha) appeared as a crow and roosted on the Kamandalu of Agasthya when Agasthya was pondering. he shooed away the crow. Yet, the divine crow tipped the Kamandalu and toppled it. Out poured Kaveri which began streaming. The crow vanished and in its place stood a little kid. Agasthya felt that the kid was playing some trick and, went to pound the little kid. However, the kid got away and Agasthya gave pursue. At last the kid vanished and Lord Ganesha showed himself to Agasthya. Agasthya was startled at the acknowledgement that he had quite recently attempted to thump the head of Lord Ganesha himself. As expiation, he thumped his own head with his fists.
